March 11, 2020 - Additional Safety Measures

It is often the case, in difficult times, that grocery stores are a vital resource to the communities they serve.

You have come to us in recent days to stock your pantry, replenish cleaning supplies, and prepare alongside others in the community.

As a grocery store, our market is in the unique position of offering essential services for our communities while also doing all we can to minimize risk to our staff and shoppers.

We want to share the things our market is doing to best serve you, care for our staff, and be a responsible member of our community:

  • Our market prides itself on its cleanliness and food safety standards, and has full-time health and safety, and food safety managers on staff. With their support, and following guidance from the CDC and other agencies, we have implemented even more rigorous cleaning practices throughout all of our stores. This includes frequently sanitizing high-touch locations like payment machines, scales, bathroom areas, carts and handbaskets. We are also changing out hot and cold bar utensils on an hourly basis during peak times.

  • We have added gloves in our bulk department for shoppers to use.

  • We have heavily invested in training our store’s management teams on food safety, with the majority of store and department leaders having completed advanced food safety training, including all supervisors in our deli departments.

  • We have stopped accepting personal cups at our coffee bars and have ceased self-serve sampling. Additionally, any staff handling ready-to-eat foods are already required to wear gloves or use tongs.

  • We are working closely with our suppliers to ensure we have the essentials that you are seeking, like pantry staples, cleaning supplies, and health and body care items.

  • Shoppers have requested hand sanitizer and sanitized wipes to cleanse cart and handbasket handles. With the increased demand nationwide for these items, we are having difficulty procuring them for our stores. While we work to find a supplier, we are tasking staff with frequently cleaning these high-touch areas.

  • We have asked any staff exhibiting symptoms of respiratory illness or fever to stay home and notify their physician.

  • Throughout all of this, we demonstrate gratitude to our staff who continue to work each day with commitment, compassion, and kindness to ensure our stores are stocked, clean, and ready to serve you.

We anticipate that guidance from federal, state and local agencies may change rapidly over the coming days and weeks. We will continue to monitor closely and be nimble in adjusting our operations to prioritize the health and safety of you and our staff.

We know you have many choices when it comes to where to purchase groceries. Thank you for choosing our market and for being an integral part of our community.

Sincerely,

Kevin and Kellie Cotter

New Earth Market celebrates its first year in Chico

May 27, 2017

By Laura Urseny, Chico Enterprise-Record

CLICK FOR FULL STORY

Chico >> It’s been a year since New Earth Market opened, the first grocery in a long time to launch in Chico.

Opening any business is a risk for the owner, but the decision makers behind New Earth had done plenty of research. Some are even longtime residents who know the area — and consumers — well.

For those of us who grew up on Betty Crocker, Nabisco and General Mills, wandering through the aisles at New Earth is quite a shock. Not much looks familiar.

That was exactly what co-owner Kevin Cotter and the team wanted for their store at East Avenue and Cohasset Road.

Not that Cotter’s big on disruption. It’s more about focusing on healthy eating. Already some customers say their habits are changing. Shoppers won’t find some brands, from popular colas to snack food, which is exactly how New Earth should be.

Not that Chico is missing healthy food outlets. S and S Natural Foods and Chico Natural Foods have a deep history here, encouraging healthy choices and good advice.

Even though extensive research was done before moving ahead with an expensive new store, what New Earth is now even surprises Cotter.

“We started out by marrying what we had in Yuba City, with what we thought worked in Chico.” The Yuba City store opened several years ago.

Then Chico’s personality stepped in with new twists. Shoppers like the fermented tea drink kombucha and vegan choices more in here than in Yuba City.

There’s also what Cotter calls “aisle shopping.” It’s big in Chico, but not so much down south.

Products situated around the store’s edges lean toward what Cotter calls “grab and go,” like wine, fruits and veggies, and quick-preparation items.

Food in the aisles is more shopping-list type like crackers, bulk products, juices, dairy and meat.

Cotter said the store is seeing those aisle items going quickly, which to him means that consumers are doing their regular shopping there.

“To us, that means people are cooking, then eating.”

Making decisions on the move has been the style of New Earth’s decision making.

“We’re not a big corporation. We try things and if they don’t work, we change. Customers give us suggestions. There are certain things the community wanted and we made it happen.”

Studying what fuels the national grocery business, New Earth has similar choices and more — like periodic musical entertainment, hot food bar and salads, a pizza business, wine tasting, coffee bar, and more.

There’s a regular place to make contributions to local charities — a nickel token is given for every bag brought in by the shopper.

There is retail sense behind some of the extras — hot food that puts expiring products to use while bringing in those looking for fast, good food. Entertainment — musical or food related like wine tasting — may bring in those who’ve never stopped, while putting at their finger tips fresh pizza, wine and beer, and salad and soup choices.

A community notice board features events from local nonprofits, and one wall of the sitting/eating area is devoted to local art that can be purchased. Health-related speakers come, and discount days focus on members of military, any health club, and seniors, among others.

What really pleases Cotter is the amount of local food that New Earth sells. What’s funny is that some shoppers still think the store is owned by a large, out-of-town corporation.

“We’re locally owned,” Cotter has said repeatedly.

“We’re good at partnering with local businesses, local groups about local food,” he said, naming off Sweet Water Milk and Mt. Ida mandarins in Oroville; Comanche Creek vegetables, Tin Roof breads and baked goods, and Pacific Culture’s kombucha and sauerkraut from Chico; and Lundberg Family Farms rice from Richvale.

The meat department makes its own sausages, along with hamburger patties, hitting it big with a fresh blueberry filled sausage.

There’s sushi from Japanese Blossom restaurant in Chico, and Rolling Stone Pizza offers fresh and made to order pizzas inside the store.

What Yuba City has over the Chico store is an organic garden. A plot adjacent to the store has been protected from pesticides and is regularly planted for harvest for the salad bar.

“If there was a plot of land near the Chico store, we’d do it,” Cotter said.

Nevertheless, “The food that we sell is clean, there are no preservatives. Everything’s made fresh.”

Asked what else residents should know about the store, Cotter mentions catering and delivery.

“We do a lot of business events, a lot of corporate,” from box lunches, to pizza, to hot dishes and more.

Usually a local musician is scheduled for the first Friday of the month.

“We’ve been very blessed. Things have gone fairly well. We have a wonderful group of people on the team, and we listen to our customers. Don’t see something? Ask, please.”

When New Earth opened, the center was home only to Laura’s Wig and Beauty Supply and Walgreens drugstore. Now SunPower by Alternative Energy Systems, offering solar power systems, and Orangetheory Fitness gym have opened.

While two locations were earmarked for restaurants — the former Scrambles restaurant at the north end, and the former tire store at the south end — Cotter said he hadn’t heard of any activity at either.

New Earth Market Donates Food

September 1, 2016

For the first half of 2016, New Earth Market donated grocery items totaling $30,000 in retail value to local food banks. This is a continuing effort to eliminate food waste and includes donations of blemished produce and items nearing their expiration date, but still safe for consumption.

New Earth Market's donations are feeding people in need, cutting back on waste and also combating misunderstandings with regard to what expiration dates on food items actually mean. Expiration dates typically just indicate when a product has reached its "peak", but doesn't necessarily mean the food has spoiled at that time, especially the case of foods that don't require refrigeration.

According to the Natural Resources Defense Council more than 90 percent of Americans discard food prematurely, and 40 percent of the U.S.'s food supply goes unused due to dating.

"Hunger is a real issue in our community and we are truly happy to give back," said Kevin Cotter, owner of New Earth Market. "Donating is the right thing to do."

Over the last three years, New Earth Market has donated over $80,000 in grocery items to local food banks. The donations went to the Yuba-Sutter Gleaners, whose local mission is to alleviate hunger among the disadvantaged and elderly, and the North State Food Bank of Butte County.

New Earth Market is a locally owned, independent, full-service grocery store, offering natural and organic products. Visit us in Yuba City at 1475 Tharp Road, and in Chico at 864 East Avenue, or online at www.NewEarthMarket.com.

New Earth Market Invites Community to Grand Opening

June 2, 2016

New Earth Market, located at the corner of East and Cohasset in Chico, will celebrate its grand opening with special events this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Friday, June 3rd, starting at noon the event will kick-off with a reusable bag giveaway, pizza sale and BBQ. Saturday, June 4th, starting at 11:00 a.m., there will be food and product sampling throughout the store and great raffle prize giveaways. Finally, this Sunday, June 5th, the grand opening will culminate with 15 percent off all regular priced items throughout the store, including supplements (excluding hot foods, salad bar and pizza).

"New Earth Market is a one-stop-shop for Chico, featuring organic grocery staples, full meat and seafood department, a huge selection of craft beer and wine, and a full health and beauty department," says store owner, Kevin Cotter. "For shoppers on the go, we have a deli, sandwiches, salad bar and hot food bar, with new selections daily. We also have Rolling Stone Pizza Company on-site."

New Earth Market Food Donations Tallied

January 13, 2016

For the year ending 2015, New Earth Market donated grocery items totaling over $35,000 in retail value to local food banks. This is a continuing effort to eliminate food waste and includes donations of blemished produce and items nearing their expiration date but still safe for consumption.

New Earth Market's donations are feeding people in need, cutting back on waste and also combating misunderstandings with regard to what expiration dates on food items actually mean. Expiration dates typically just indicate when a product has reached its "peak", but doesn't necessarily mean the food has spoiled at that time, especially the case for foods that don't require refrigeration. Many consumers are often unaware of this and are too quick to throw out food that's perfectly edible.

According to the Natural Resources Defense Council more than 90 percent of Americans discard food prematurely, and 40 percent of the U.S.'s food supply goes unused due to dating.

"Being a part of the Yuba-Sutter community, we could not simply throw away good food when there are people going hungry," said Kevin Cotter, Owner of New Earth Market. "Donating is the right thing to do."

Over the last three years, New Earth Market has donated over $50,000 in grocery items to local food banks. The majority of the donations went to the Yuba-Sutter Gleaners, whose local mission is to alleviate hunger among the disadvantaged and elderly.

New Earth Market is a full-service grocery store, offering natural and organic products, located at 1475 Tharp Road in Yuba City.
